It’s common to think that the days get shorter in the winter, but the opposite is true. The shortest day of the year is the first day of winter, after which the days get progressively longer until the first day of summer in June, six months from now.
Since 1977, every year, the American Cancer Society has designated the third Thursday of November as the Great American Smokeout. This year, this important event occurs on November 17.
What do you think of when you hear the word Halloween? Eating an endless amount of treats, telling scary stories, or carving giant pumpkins may pop into your mind. October 31 brings a day full of costumes and trick-or-treating, but why do we celebrate Halloween? This spooky holiday dates back a couple of thousand years and has changed quite a bit over time.
In November of this year, there will be an election for various representatives, senators, and governors, not only in Arizona, but across the country. It’s a midterm election, which means there won’t be any presidential candidates on the ballot.
Ask most kids, “When does one year end and another begin?,” and they’ll probably tell you that the year begins in July or August, and ends in May, with summer separating one year from the next. Kids are way more aware of the school year than they are the calendar year because it’s such a huge part of their lives.
Your child may never admit this to you but, after a month or two of summer break, children are often bored and anxious to get back to school. What seemed like so much fun back in May, has evolved into long days with kids not knowing quite what to do with themselves.
Here in Arizona, kids can comfortably spend time outside year round. Unlike most of the country, summer isn’t just a few months of nice weather since it’s always nice in Arizona.
This month, students will begin their long summer break. To keep them from getting bored by mid-June, we have some tips and activities that will make sure your kids have a fun and productive summer.
