When in April the sweet showers fall<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

And pierce the drought of March to the root, and all<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The veins are bathed in liquor of such power<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

As brings about the engendering of the flower.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The above lines are a <\/span>modern version<\/span><\/a> of the introduction to <\/span>The Canterbury Tales<\/span><\/i>, originally written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer around 1390\u2014630 years ago. It\u2019s an often-hilarious poem frequently credited with popularizing English in written form. Since it begins with a line about April showers, it only seems right that April is designated as National Poetry Month, which is an excellent opportunity for parents to share the joys of poetry with their children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every kid probably starts out loving poetry from the first time they hear a Mother Goose nursery rhyme, and later, by reading <\/span>The Cat in the Hat<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>Green Eggs and Ham<\/span><\/i>. And yet, as they get older, many children seem to lose interest in poetry. As adults, we should do everything possible to change that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why We Celebrate<\/b><\/p>\n

National Poetry Month<\/span><\/a> was established in 1996 to highlight the legacies and achievements of American poets. Today, America\u2019s many Poetry Month celebrations during the month of April have collectively become the largest literary event in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is Poetry?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Poetry is defined as a form of literature that expresses feelings and ideas while using a distinctive structure and rhythm. There are a variety of different poem types based on the format, rhyme scheme, and subject matter. Some examples of poetry styles are the Ballad, Limerick, and a Haiku. Every April, literary organizations come together to increase the attention which poetry receives and to support poets and poetry.<\/span> The Academy of American Poets<\/span><\/a> was inspired after seeing the success of <\/span>Black History Month<\/span><\/a> in February and <\/span>Women\u2019s History Month<\/span><\/a> in March.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
