By the end of third grade, schoolwork would be done exclusively using cursive, and in the fifth grade, if your cursive was neat enough, you got to write in ink. Writing in ink meant you had arrived; you were practically an adult.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lpatucson.org\/central\/cursive-blog\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At one time, when people communicated using pen and paper, cursive was the common currency. No one printed their letters\u2014printing was for very young children\u2014and typewriters were used more for formal or business communications. If one were writing anything\u2014from a shopping list to a thank-you note to a school essay\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QyLgo1XkYP0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cursive is what was used<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lpatucson.org\/central\/cursive-blog\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cursive wasn\u2019t only a means of written communication; it was an act of self-expression. Writing in cursive was an art. More importantly, a person\u2019s cursive handwriting not only identified them, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/p\/15-fascinating-things-your-handwriting-can-reveal-about-your-personality-42672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told you something about them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Check out these two handwriting samples, courtesy of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/editions.lib.umn.edu\/electionacademy\/2018\/11\/20\/npr-on-growing-struggles-with-signature-verification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Election Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/jasminnahar\/pieces-of-handwriting-so-satisfying-theyll-make\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BuzzFeed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and see if you can form a mental picture of the writers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lpatucson.org\/central\/cursive-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7569 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/lpatucson.org\/central\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/07\/Cursive-2-.jpg\" alt=\"Cursive hand writing \" width=\"242\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lpatucson.org\/central\/cursive-3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7570 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/lpatucson.org\/central\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/07\/Cursive-3.jpg\" alt=\"Cursive hand writing \" width=\"228\" height=\"159\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only was one\u2019s handwriting unique, but one\u2019s hand-written signature was a nearly un-duplicatable form of identification. Cursive signatures were difficult to forge and were remarkably consistent throughout one\u2019s life. Your signature proved that you were you.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cursive Disappears<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As pervasive as cursive handwriting was in American culture, the teaching of cursive began to lose steam in the latter half of the last century. With limited school budgets, many educators thought that resources could be better spent on other subjects, and with ever-increasing time being spent on standardized testing prep, many school districts deemed cursive an unnecessary skill, taking too much valuable time to teach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With computers, phones and tablets becoming ubiquitous in the mid-2000s, hardly anyone needed a pen and paper for anything, and cursive seemed even more irrelevant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final blow came in 2009 when states banded together to launch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/teachers\/blog-posts\/brian-smith\/common-core-cursive-still-relevant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Core State Standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those standards recognized students\u2019 use of keyboarding as opposed to writing and dropped cursive from the suggested curricula of schools. By 2012, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smokymountainnews.com\/news\/item\/8665-as-schools-rapidly-phase-out-cursive-its-certain-demise-is-met-with-mixed-opinions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no longer taught cursive. It was considered a \u201cdying art\u201d and it was felt this outdated art had been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/cursive-handwriting-disappearing-from-public-schools\/2013\/04\/04\/215862e0-7d23-11e2-a044-676856536b40_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replaced by technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cursive Makes a Comeback<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a few years, however, many Americans realized that unfamiliarity with cursive might be problematic. For example, one can certainly read the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/10\/31\/us\/u-s-constitution-fast-facts\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constitution of the United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nccs.net\/blogs\/americas-founding-documents\/the-declaration-of-independence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declaration of Independence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/exhibit\/remembering-lincoln-at-gettysburg\/QRng9wAn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gettysburg Address<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online, but to read them in their handwritten form adds a personalization that seeing them on an iPhone lacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another problem with not knowing cursive is that it isolates those who are cursive illiterates, separating them from the multiple generations who still use it. No child wants to feel alienated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so, just when it looked like learning cursive was down for the count, states began changing their minds, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/12\/us\/cursive-is-coming-back-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinstating cursive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their curricula.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s So Good About Cursive?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who would eliminate cursive from schools are only seeing it as an outmoded form of messaging, and if that\u2019s how one looks at it, then switching exclusively to keyboarding makes sense. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahafhandwriting.org\/sites\/default\/pdf\/white-paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning to write in cursive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has several proven collateral benefits that children can draw upon for the rest of their lives. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/memory-medic\/201308\/biological-and-psychology-benefits-learning-cursive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, those benefits include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Eye-Hand Coordination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Learning a skill like throwing and catching a ball requires that the brain create new circuitry to evaluate what is seen, what movements are required, and to estimate speed and predict a ball\u2019s future location. This developed circuitry is permanent and can be called into action in other situations. Learning cursive employs similar skills, additionally requiring constant adaptation, thought and flexibility as every written word demands a different motion and it\u2019s all done while thinking about what is being written.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Task Mastery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Cursive may be a complicated skill, but it is one that can be mastered by any child. From learning the motor skills of how to hold a pencil or pen, moving it deliberately to form letters, how to move the hand and arm, honing memory skills in recalling the letters and how they connect to each other, paying attention to what letters have been written and what letters are to come\u2014all of these important skills are constantly used when learning cursive and, as a child masters these skills, their self-confidence improves.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Increased Creativity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Using cursive is a way of expressing one\u2019s self, as each letter can be creatively constructed. The writer can fine tune the shape of the letters and words as one would if creating a work of art. And because writing in cursive is a slower process than keyboarding, the writer has time to think, imagine, create and craft, not just the message, but how the message is conveyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, a report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/education\/connecting-dots-role-cursive-dyslexia-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claims that writing in cursive can be a real help to those coping with dyslexia. According to Marilyn Zecher, a language specialist at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/asdec.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlantic Seaboard Dyslexia Education Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">students with dyslexia have difficulty learning to read because their brains associate sounds and letter combinations inefficiently. But cursive can help them with the decoding process because it integrates hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and other brain and memory functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, the Arizona <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azed.gov\/standards-practices\/k-12standards\/english-language-arts-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board of Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> amended the Common Core Standards and became <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/arizona-becomes-first-state-to-require-cursive-writing-in-schools\/375468644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to require that cursive again be taught in elementary school, beginning in the third grade. Today, more than half the states have returned to curricula that includes cursive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, those who endorse cursive are, in all likelihood, fighting a battle that will eventually be lost. Many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/4-worst-arguments-teaching-cursive-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young educators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feel that including cursive in a school\u2019s curriculum is an idea pushed primarily by baby boomers who are trying to bring back those nostalgic days of yesteryear, and they may be right. As memories of the days when cursive was ubiquitously used for everything begin to fade, those supporting keyboarding will likely win this battle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, though, it\u2019s nice to know that the tradition of cursive\u2014which can be traced from ancient Rome in the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BC, to Charlemagne in 781 AD, to modern English\u2014is an art that will be learned by at least one more generation of students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This blog is old school\u2014literally, old school.
