But there\u2019s a lot more to celebrate in February, including Black History Month, Valentine\u2019s Day, and Presidents Day. Here\u2019s a quick rundown of these important events all taking place this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 20px;\">\n<b>Black History Month<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the month of February, we recognize the many, often overlooked, contributions African Americans have made to America\u2019s history. The evolution of Black History Month itself is fascinating, tracing back to the end of the Civil War.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/featured-documents\/emancipation-proclamation\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emancipation Proclamation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went into effect on January 1, 1863, ending slavery, and was codified in the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13th Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified in 1868. And yet, it may come as a surprise to many students, it wasn\u2019t until the 1960s \u2026 just 60 years ago, and 96 years after the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/14th-amendment\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14th Amendment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promised that the government would enforce \u201cequal protection of the laws\u201d \u2026 that African Americans were finally guaranteed the rights that the Constitution says every citizen should enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/black-history\/civil-rights-act\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil Rights Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was passed in 1964, African Americans could be denied entry to theaters, restaurants, hotels, swimming pools, libraries and public schools, and could be denied a job based on race. Before the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/black-history\/voting-rights-act\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting Rights Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1965 became law, African Americans could encounter state and local barriers, designed to deny them their right to vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with these advancements, textbooks and classrooms in the 1960s and 1970s primarily focused on the history of Caucasian Americans when teaching American history. Despite being a significant part of the American narrative, the lives of many prominent African Americans were rarely mentioned in history classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1976, President Gerald Ford seized the opportunity of America\u2019s bicentennial year to officially recognize Black History Month. In doing so, President Ford encouraged Americans to \u201cseize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every day, each of us encounter things<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bahaiteachings.org\/african-american-inventions-that-changed-the-world\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invented by African Americans.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Here are a few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 35px;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potato chips \u2013 Created by George Crum in 1853 while working at a resort in Saratoga Springs, New York.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Super Soaker \u2013 After a successful career at NASA, Lonnie G. Johnson invented the high-performance, pressurized water gun, which became the #1-selling toy of the 1990s.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traffic signal \u2013 Garrett Morgan&#8217;s three-light system improved traffic control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The refrigerated truck \u2013 Frederick McKinley Jones&#8217;s portable cooling unit revolutionized food transport.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The home security system \u2013 Marie Van Brittan Brown created the first home security system in 1966.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile communication \u2013 In 1887, Granville T. Woods invented the induction telegraph, which allowed train-to-train and train-to-station communication, preventing many rail accidents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gas mask \u2013 Invented by Garrett Morgan in 1912, the gas mask saved thousands of soldiers\u2019 lives during World War I, when poisonous gas was first used as a weapon. If that weren\u2019t enough, he also invented the modern traffic signal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The light bulb \u2013 Edison may have invented the concept, but Lewis Latimer added the carbon filament that made lightbulbs last longer and made them commercially viable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open-heart surgery \u2013 Daniel Hale Williams established the Provident Hospital and Training School Association in Chicago, insisting on the highest standards concerning sanitary conditions. In 1893, he performed the first open-heart surgery, which was also the first time a chest cavity had ever been opened without the patient dying of an infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blood bank \u2013 Dr. Charles Drew invented a technique for the long-term preservation of blood plasma. Prior to his discovery, blood could only be stored for two days. Dr. Drew also discovered that everyone has the same type of plasma, regardless of blood type, making plasma transfusions universal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other African Americans who have made the world a better place are<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/parks-rosa-1913-2005-0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosa Parks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/king-martin-luther-jr-1929-1968\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/cole-nat-king-1919-1965\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nat King Cole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/alvin-ailey-dance-theater\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alvin Ailey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/gordy-berry-jr-1929\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berry Gordy, Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/fitzgerald-ella-1917-1996\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ella Fitzgerald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blackpast.org\/aah\/ellington-edward-duke-1899-1974\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duke Ellington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/gibson-althea-1927-2003\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Althea Gibson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jackierobinson.org\/jackie-robinson\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jackie Robinson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/aah\/marshall-thurgood-1908-1993\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thurgood Marshall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Barack-Obama\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barack Obama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the list could go on and on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American history has benefited from the skills and talents of people from every race, religion, and ethnic background. Celebrating Black History Month is a way for Americans to express gratitude to members of the African American community who have given our country so much, and whose achievements went unrecognized for so long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Valentine Day<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Roman Empire, which, in 270 A.D., was nearing the end of its domination as a world power, had to maintain a massive army to defend its borders. Roman emperor<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycollegian.com\/2004\/02\/the-soldiers-of-saint-valentine\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claudius II<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives or families, so he outlawed marriage for young men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valentine was a Catholic priest who considered the ban on marriage to be unjust, and he secretly performed marriages for any young couples who requested it. When Claudius discovered Valentine breaking the law, he had him arrested and sent to prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catholic Church made Valentine a saint for his sacrifice, and chose February 14, the date of his death, as the day on which he would be honored. Centuries later, in medieval England and France, people believed that February 14 was the day that many birds, returning for the spring, picked their mates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English poet,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Geoffrey-Chaucer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geoffrey Chaucer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made the link between St. Valentine\u2019s Day and romance in a poem composed in the late 1300s about birds. The fanciful poem has birds discussing everything from politics to love, and ends in praise of Saint Valentine, relating Valentine\u2019s Day to the date the birds would choose their mates, and to the coming of warmer weather. To paraphrase:<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 25px;\">\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saint Valentine, who sits aloft,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The birds all sing for your sake\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have good cause to rejoice full oft,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since each a marriage with its mate does make<\/span><\/i>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From that brief mention in just one poem from more than 600 years ago, the tradition started. By the mid-1700s, people regularly made and exchanged Valentine\u2019s Day cards, a custom which became popular in America in the mid-1800s when Esther Howland started the New England Valentine Company and began mass-producing Valentine cards. Today, 180 million cards are exchanged each year, and it\u2019s all based on an incident that happened over 1,700 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Presidents Day<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the death of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ducksters.com\/biography\/uspresidents\/georgewashington.php\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George Washington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1799, his birthday on February 22 started being celebrated as a kind of unofficial holiday. Every year, Americans would observe Washington\u2019s birthday by commemorating his achievements as one of America\u2019s first great leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1879, the annual celebration of Washington\u2019s birth had gained immense popularity. In response, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law, making February 22 a federal holiday. However, since the date coincided with Abraham Lincoln\u2019s birthday, just 10 days earlier on February 12, Americans began honoring both Washington and Lincoln on February 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1971, the federal government enacted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This act established certain holidays to be celebrated on Mondays, thereby increasing the number of three-day weekends for federal employees. Consequently, Washington\u2019s birthday celebration was moved to the third Monday of February. Although it was still technically Washington\u2019s Birthday, states soon adopted the term \u201cPresidents Day\u201d to give it a broader name and honor all who have served as president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this holiday originally began as a celebration of Washington alone, and we should never overlook the significance of our nation\u2019s first leader, it is crucial that we reflect on the remarkable achievements of all our presidents. Each president has played a vital role in shaping the United States into the nation we know today.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite February having only 28 days, it\u2019s lucky that, in the middle of winter, we have a month that\u2019s packed with so many reasons to celebrate!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February, the shortest month, is packed with significant events like Groundhog Day and the 60th anniversary of Super Bowl Sunday.
