Whan that aprill with his shoures soote
\nThe droghte of march hath perced to the roote,
\nAnd bathed every veyne in swich licour
\nOf which vertu engendred is the flour<\/em><\/p>\n

Though the spelling and language may seem foreign, the above lines are from The Canterbury Tales<\/em>, written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer around 1390. It\u2019s an often hilarious poem frequently credited with popularizing English in written form. Since it begins with a line about April showers, it only seems right that April is designated as National Poetry Month<\/a>, which is an excellent opportunity for parents to share the joys of poetry with their children. <\/p>\n

Every kid probably starts out loving poetry from the first time they hear a Mother Goose nursery rhyme, and later, by reading The Cat in the Hat<\/em> or Green Eggs and Ham<\/em>. And yet, as they get older, many children seem to lose interest in poetry. As adults, we should do everything possible to change that. <\/p>\n
