So, it should come as no surprise that when children are agonizing over nightly homework assignments, parents are eager to alleviate the discomfort by offering their help. This raises several questions: What are the best ways to help kids with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-to-help-your-kids-with-homework-without-doing-it-for-them-126192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and how much help is too much?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there has always been some debate about the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/core\/fileparse.php\/16301\/urlt\/10BenHomework.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usefulness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of homework, parents and students should keep in mind that teachers have only a few hours per day to teach kids most of what they\u2019ll need to know for the rest of their lives. If you can read, write, add, subtract, or locate North America on a globe, a teacher taught you that. With such a short amount of time to impart so much information, homework has been a necessary extension of the school day since the second half of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homework#United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ease the burden on children, there are several things parents can do that students will find helpful.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Communicate With Teachers<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open a line of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.readingrockets.org\/article\/building-parent-teacher-relationships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your child\u2019s teacher early in the year. Learn the teacher\u2019s homework policy and expectations. Teachers will also be able to provide parents with information on a student\u2019s area of weakness and how parents can provide the most effective assistance. Or, if a student doesn\u2019t understand a homework assignment, a quick call or email to a teacher can save time and get everyone on the right track.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Create a Designated Homework Area<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s never too early to introduce<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parents\/essentials\/structure\/buildingblocks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">structure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a child\u2019s life. Kids are most comfortable when life is consistent and predictable, and creating a homework area provides that stability.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.com\/magazine\/article\/Organize_a_Homework_Space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create an area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the home that\u2019s well lit and far away from distractions like TV, and yet not so isolated that the child feels they\u2019re in solitary confinement. Stock the homework area with paper, pencils, glue, scissors, or any other items the student may need to complete homework assignments. Personalize the space so your student knows it\u2019s their homework retreat.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Schedule the Same Time for Homework Every Day<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know your child better than anyone. Do they get tired after dinner and require an early bedtime? Do they need time to burn off energy and decompress when they first arrive home from school? Do they have outside activities that demand after-school time?<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Plan-a-Homework-Schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a few hours for homework each day at a time when your student is alert without being overly energetic. Once a homework schedule is made, it should be a daily priority. No other plans should ever conflict with the homework schedule.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Motivate and Assist Your Student<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your student isn\u2019t going to be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.successbydesign.com\/blogs\/news\/how-to-get-students-to-do-homework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">motivated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do homework if you\u2019re in another room watching TV. The entire family must commit to the homework schedule. Find something you can quietly do in the vicinity of their homework area. By staying nearby, you can monitor your student\u2019s activities, and you\u2019re also available to offer<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/tamar-chansky\/whose-homework-is-it-anyway-how-parents-can-help-not-hinder-their-childs-success_b_8381872.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and encouragement, or provide a needed break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing to remember is to never do any of your child\u2019s homework for them. It may be tempting to give a child the answer to a problem they\u2019re struggling with, but the point of any schoolwork is to educate. Doing the work for them<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/too-much-help-with-homework-can-hinder-your-childs-learning-progress-54052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teaches children nothing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Give them advice, point them in the right direction, guide them, but, no matter how tempting it may be to relieve the horrible pain that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dividing fractions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can inflict, children need to discover the answers on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students and parents partner in completing homework assignments \u2014 even if that partnership means parents are just nearby and observing their student \u2014 finishing homework each night will give a child a feeling of accomplishment and the knowledge that they\u2019re prepared to face an exciting, new day at school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parents will do anything for their children.
