For students, it\u2019s a time for new beginnings and a fresh start; for parents, it\u2019s a time to get bored kids back into a routine with plenty to do to occupy their days.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As the 2023-2024 academic year begins, it\u2019s a good time to think about the importance of school and education to a child\u2019s future. It\u2019s also a good time to let kids know that the year ahead can hold great things.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can help your student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicschoolreview.com\/blog\/10-ways-to-help-your-student-start-the-school-year-on-the-right-foot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get a good start<\/a> on the school year, and stay on track all year long:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Look back before looking forward<\/strong> \u2013 Parents and children should reflect on the previous school year and make a list of everything that went right and everything that went not-so-right. Analyze the elements that were involved in successful outcomes, so they can be used to create future strategies. Then, analyze the elements involved when things went wrong and how those factors can be avoided in the future.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Have a meaningful discussion about school<\/strong> \u2013 Find out what your student likes and doesn\u2019t like about school. Discuss the academic, social, and behavioral aspects of school. What subjects are difficult? How does your student get along with classmates? If your child has suddenly started acting up in class\u2014or has suddenly become apathetic\u2014discuss the reasons for this change in behavior.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Review organizational and study skills<\/strong> \u2013 Sometimes, the problems a child has can simply be lack of organization. Being unorganized can waste valuable time and can get students confused. Help your child <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordlearning.com\/organized-middle-school-students-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organize<\/a> their school supplies, then show them how to create a meaningful to-do list. Also review good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatschools.org\/gk\/articles\/study-skills-for-middle-school-and-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study skills<\/a> to ensure that your child always completes their homework and is prepared for tests.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Set new goals<\/strong> \u2013 Every school year is different and may require setting new and realistic goals for the coming school year. Goals should be achievable and are best accomplished in small steps.\n<p style=\"padding-top: 20px;\">There are many suggestions for teaching kids how to make and keep the goals they choose. Possibly the most realistic and easiest to remember is the <a href=\"https:\/\/meant2prevent.ca\/downloadable-smart-goal-planning-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMART<\/a> goals method, an acronym for the steps necessary for successful resolution\/goal setting. According to a number of universities, including the University of California and Iowa State University, goals should be:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Specific<\/strong> \u2013 Often, children make resolutions that are very broad. \u201cI\u2019m going to spend more time on homework\u201d is too vague; \u201cI\u2019m going to spend two hours each night on homework\u201d is something that is \u2026<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Measurable<\/strong> \u2013 If your child sets two hours per night for homework, it\u2019s very easy to determine if that goal has been met. If it\u2019s 9 p.m., and your student has been watching TV since 6 p.m., it\u2019s clear they haven\u2019t met their goal. Maybe the goal of two hours wasn\u2019t \u2026<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Achievable<\/strong> \u2013 There\u2019s no point in setting goals that are unattainable. If your child\u2019s goal is to graduate 8th grade by the age of 10, but they\u2019re a solid \u201cC\u201d student, their goal will probably go unrealized. If your child can\u2019t sit still, then maybe a two-hour stretch of studying is too long. Maybe studying in eight 15-minute increments makes more sense because resolutions\/goals only work if they\u2019re \u2026<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Realistic\/Relevant<\/strong> \u2013 Goals should be relevant to your child\u2019s life and should be realistic. It\u2019s nice that a 5th grader\u2019s goal is to be the first human on Mars, but perhaps making a resolution to get a \u201cB\u201d in English is more realistic and more relevant to their current situation. Goals are only relevant if they\u2019re \u2026<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>Time-Based<\/strong> \u2013 Goals should never be open-ended. Goals with an end date are measurable. Raising one\u2019s math grade from a \u201cC\u201d to a \u201cB\u201d is a worthy goal if it\u2019s going to happen by the end of the next quarter. If the timeframe isn\u2019t included, the goal becomes meaningless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parents should communicate with teachers to see that students get a good start on the new school year. It\u2019s not difficult to turn last year\u2019s challenges into this year\u2019s successes. It simply takes all the players\u2014parents, teachers, and students\u2014working together to create a workable, achievable plan for a successful and rewarding academic year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time of year again that both parents and kids look forward to with excited anticipation: It\u2019s the start of a new school year!
