The Origins of St. Valentine’s Day

Each year, we give and receive cards on Valentine’s Day, and see the heart-shaped boxes of candy in stores, but where did these traditions come from? Who was Saint Valentine and why do we devote a day to him?

Daddy-Daughter Dance

The Heritage Daddy-Daughter Dance is this Friday, February 10, from 6-8 p.m. Female students and the significant male in their lives are invited for an evening of dancing, fun, and memories.

Valentine’s Day Bake Sale

On Valentine’s Day, Heritage students can purchase Chocolate Chip Cookies and Decorate-Your-Own Sugar Cookies at the concession stand during lunch recess.

Candy Grams for Valentine’s Day

Heritage students can send a special Lollipop Gram, Flower Gram, or a Duo Special to their friends for Valentine’s Day. Candy Grams include a special message from the sender, and will be delivered at 2:30 p.m. on February 14.

Enroll in Summer Fun!

You can keep your student from getting bored during the long summer break, by enrolling them in Heritage’s Summer Camp program. We’ll keep kids—and their brains—busy with field trips, arts and crafts, games, computer instruction, sports, drama and music, swimming, and more. Summer Camp takes place Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m, May 22 to July 14 at the Glendale campus. Register your student for a summer full of fun. Early enrollment begins on April 29!

Pee Wee Martial Arts

From February 7 to March 2, students in grades K-4 can learn martial arts at Heritage. Classes will be held in the cafeteria, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. A $25 enrollment fee includes eight sessions and a T-shirt.

The Benefits of Playing Sports

Getting a child involved in sports has positive physical, psychological, and social effects, although, not every kid is interested in playing sports for a variety of reasons. Some kids are shy, some lack self-esteem, some have physical obstacles to overcome, some may not be disciplined enough, some may be short on patience or perseverance. Those are all valid issues. There is, however, one thing that addresses them all: participation in sports.

Future Freshman Prepare for High School

All 8th graders and their parents are encouraged to attend Future Freshman Night on January 12, at 6 p.m., in the south gym lobby. Information on local high schools and the 8th grade trip will be reviewed.

Heritage Celebrates the Arts

Join us on Tuesday, January 31 for a night of fine arts. The evening will feature an Art Gallery with art from every student, a teacher Art Auction, delicious dinner, and our much anticipated Talent Show. Tickets are $5 in advance, so get them now or pay $8 at the door.

Documenting Your Family Through the Years

There was a time when video cameras were extremely expensive, enormously bulky, and a rarity for the average person. It’s only in the last 10-15 years that photos and video became ubiquitously available to everyone via phones and tablets, and that’s a fortunate and fun development for kids.

Heritage Helping Hands Donates Food to Those in Need

On Monday, January 9, Heritage Helping Hands, in partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank, will again distribute food to community members in need, including Heritage families. It’s anonymous, it’s free, and it’s open to everyone.

Making and Keeping New Year’s Resolutions with Kids

Many people start each year by making New Year’s resolutions. As adults, we often resolve to do something on January 1, and then feel we’ve failed if we don’t follow through as the year progresses. Resolutions are a wonderful idea at any age, although, if adults have difficulty keeping them, children may find resolutions even more troublesome. How can parents introduce children to the idea of New Year’s resolutions, without pressuring them or setting them up for failure?
